Quick answer: Merzouga, the village at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, is a long way from Marrakech: a full day on the road over the High Atlas. That is why most people do it as a 3-day trip, splitting the way out over two days with stops at Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorge, and coming back on day 3. If you want an easier return, a 4-day trip adds a night in Ouarzazate on the way back.

Where is Merzouga and why go there?

Merzouga is a small village in the south-east of Morocco, right next to Erg Chebbi, the biggest field of sand dunes in the country. This is the Sahara most people picture: orange dunes, camels at sunset and a sky full of stars. Desert camps sit among the dunes a short camel ride from the village.

How long does it take to get from Marrakech to Merzouga?

Count on a full day of driving, around 8 hours plus stops, on a road that crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Doing it in one go is tiring and you miss the best places on the way, so the usual plan is to break the trip in two.

The classic route, day by day

  • Day 1: Marrakech, the High Atlas and the Tizi n’Tichka pass, a visit of Aït Ben Haddou, then on through Ouarzazate to a night in Tinghir.
  • Day 2: the Todra Gorge in the morning, then the road to Merzouga, a camel ride into the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset and a night in a desert camp.
  • Day 3: sunrise over the dunes and the drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the evening.

With a fourth day, you sleep in Ouarzazate on the way back, so the return becomes two shorter days instead of one long one.

What are the options to get there?

  • An organised trip from Marrakech. The easiest way: transport, the hotel on the way, the desert camp, the camel ride and most meals are sorted, and you are picked up at your hotel.
  • Driving yourself. Possible with a rental car, but it is a long mountain road and you still need to book the hotel, the camp and the camels. Official travel advice from several countries recommends avoiding driving at night in Morocco.
  • Public transport. Long-distance buses exist, but the journey is long, connections are limited and you still have to arrange the camp and the camel ride once you arrive.

What is a night in an Erg Chebbi desert camp like?

It depends on the camp. Our trips use a luxury camp in the dunes: tents with real beds, air conditioning and a private bathroom with shower and toilet. The evening is dinner, a bonfire and live Berber music, and the morning starts with sunrise from the top of a dune. There is no wifi, which most people end up loving.
